Taormina has captivated travellers for over two thousand years. Founded as a Greek colony in the fourth century BC, the town is home to the iconic Teatro Antico — a Greco-Roman amphitheatre perched on a cliff with sweeping views of Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea. A leisurely stroll along Corso Umberto, the pedestrianised main street, reveals centuries of layered architecture: Norman arches, Baroque churches, medieval towers and elegant piazzas lined with cafés. The Villa Comunale public gardens, originally laid out by an English noblewoman in the late 1800s, offer shaded terraces filled with subtropical plants and panoramic viewpoints that stretch from Calabria to the volcanic summit of Etna.

Just below Taormina, the nature reserve of Isola Bella lies in the turquoise waters of Mazzarò Bay. Protected by the Sicilian government since 1998, this tiny island is connected to the pebble beach by a narrow sand bar that appears and disappears with the tide. The surrounding marine area teems with sea urchins, colourful wrasse, octopus and posidonia seagrass meadows.
